Stefan Hepites Centenary

Horia Hulubei Foundation marked the Stefan Hepites Centenary by reminding this event to the scientific community by two posters worked out by Dr. Bogdan Antonescu.

2018

International Workshop on Advances in Nanomaterials, September 10-12, 2018, Magurele

The workshop was mainly focused on (i) Low dimensional systems and heterojunctions, (ii) Size effects, quantum dots and nanomagnetism, (iii) Spintronics and multifunctionality, and (iv) Photovoltaics, photocatalysis and photonics. It put together researchers with different profiles – experimental, theoretical and computational physicists, chemists and engineers – providing an excellent opportunity for disseminating of the newest research results and preparation of new scientific projects. A number of their presentations, sometimes with minor modifications, are collected in this volume.

The workshop was organized by the National Institute of Materials Physics (NIMP) with its International Center for Training and Advanced Research (Centre International de Formation et Recherche Avancee – CIFRA), by the Physics Department of the University of Bucharest and by the UNESCO Chair of the Horia Hulubei Foundation. Its main sponsors were ICTP Trieste and NIPM. As the previous workshops, organized in Magurele by essentially the same institutions, it had a regional character, joining mainly, but not exclusively, scientists from Central European countries.

The poster of the workshop is available here.

The program of the workshop is given here.

The proceedings of the workshop are available here (cover).

Homage to Professor Bányai at his 80th anniversary

On October 17, 2018, Professor Ladislau Alexander Bányai was present in Magurele, where his 80th birthday was celebrated at the Physics Department of the University of Bucharest. The poster of this event can be seen here.

The event started with the presentation of the volume published in the honor of his birthday: Ladislaus Bányai: profile in motion (cover, book), edited by Horia Hulubei Publishing House.

After that, Prof. Alexandru Aldea delivered a short speech, devoted to the main aspects of the scientific activity of his former colleague and co-worker.

In the next step, Professor Bányai spoke about his recent results on irreversibility and dissipation in a solvable model.

Finally, a recent book of the Horia Hulubei Publishing House, devoted to the PhD thesis of Şerban Ţiţeica, was presented to the audience.

2017

International conference of UNESCO Chairs in Natural Sciences: “Mobilizing UNESCO Chairs for Policy Action Towards the 2030 Agenda”, 5 – 7 July 2017, Geneva

The first international conference of UNESCO Chair in natural sciences took place in Geneva, as stated in the title. General information is provided by the web site https://en.unesco.org/sc-chairs-conference and http://www.unesco.org/new/fileadmin/MULTIMEDIA/HQ/SC/temp/Chairs-SC_Geneva2017_programme-EN.pdf. The representative of our Chair, Dr. Victor Barsan, presented a poster, about our activities. Unfortunately, his name was written incorrectly (Bersan) and mentioned as a member of the All-Russian Research Institute for Electrification of Agriculture (!).

For us, the conference was a nice opportunity of exchanging views and discussing future cooperations, mainly with Chairs from Cuba, Greece, Nigeria and Tunisia.

International activities

HHF has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Abdus Salam Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, aiming to foster the cooperation between Romanian scientists, Romanian institutions and ICTP. Inside the HHF, an informal group (which is not a juridical person), International Centre for Physics Bucharest ( Website ), has emerged, aiming to coordinate the main aspects of this cooperation. The ultimate goal of these efforts is the creation of an international institute, ICTP-RO, affiliated/associated with ICTP-Trieste.

The first institutional effect of the cooperation between ICTP and HHF is the establishment of a UNESCO Chair in Sustainable Development through Research and Education in Modern Physics in Bucharest. The host institution is ICTP, and the implementing institution – the Horia Hulubei Foundation.
