We recently received – as a kind gift from Professor Ladislau Alexander Bányai – a precious book of Yvette Cauchois and Horia Hulubei, actually the only one authored by them: Constantes sélectionnées – Longueurs d’onde des émissions X et des discontinuités d’absorbtion X, as the first volume of a series of Tables de constantes et donnees numeriques, in the French publishing house Hermann, Paris, 1947.
The book is not a mechanical reproduction of data published in the scientific literature, but an attentive and critical selection of most credible and precise results. The authors took into consideration not only the precision reported by experimentalists, but also their equipment and methodology. The fact that Cauchois and Hulubei were trusted with such an exquisite task by the International Council of Scientific Unions of the International Union of Chemistry – the institution supervising the publication of this series of tables – is a measure of their prestige s members of the international scientific community.
